When talking about chatbot development using artificial intelligence or machine learning, the first thing that comes to mind is the images of a dystopian future controlled by machines that become self-conscious and rebel against humans.

But this distant and frightening reality is only in the movies. In fact, these technologies exist and are used for good, helping in the patients’ diagnosis, in business and legal processes, in the creation of diverse digital tools, among other functionalities.

There is, however, a great deal of conceptual confusion when it comes to differentiating one from the other. With that in mind, we have resolved to elucidate some specific issues that define these technologies. Follow us!

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a concept that emerged in academia in the 1950s. The inaugural discussion of this technology occurs at the 1956 Artificial Intelligence Conference.

Since then, several surveys have been conducted in this area. In the 1990s, for example, an IBM computer, Deep Blue, impressed the world by winning the world chess champion.

Applied AI, which is Artificial Intelligence technology, which serves only for specific functions (such as playing chess), is also widely used in the video game industry, animating gameplay strategies for opponents of single player games.

Other uses of this technology refer to the operating systems of stand-alone cars or to the personal assistants (such as Apple’s Siri and Cortana of Microsoft).

A further step for Artificial Intelligence technologies would be the simulation of neural networks of the human brain for the creation of devices with multifunctional cognition, what they call generalized AI. But for now, advances in the area are most noticeable in the field of AI even applied.

Machine Learning

This technology uses algorithms to analyze large amounts of data, learn from them, and create predictions about specific issues.

Machine Learning is especially useful when working with analysis of data quantity for which time and human intelligence limitations aren’t enough.

Machine Learning algorithms enable machines to analyze gigantic amounts of data in legal processes quickly. What would require months of studying and reading by a lawyers team can be quickly resolved through a software. In addition, there are applications of this technology to determine buying behavior and market trends.

One of the latest highlights of Machine Learning technology is chatbots that simulate conversations in chat media and automate customer service. We at IlhaSoft, for example, are developing a multi-lingual chatbot platform with support and investments from Unicef Innovation.

Differences

About the two concepts, Artificial Intelligence is the most comprehensive term and came first. It can be said that Machine Learning is an area of the field of Artificial Intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence can be defined as the general field encompassing research with software and algorithms that enable machines to perform functions that previously only competed with human intelligence.

Machine Learning, in turn, is the technology that enables Artificial Intelligence. These are the gears inside AI systems.

These “gears” perform specific tasks and are developed with their own experience of use, dispensing constant maintenance in terms of programming. In addition, the scope of the “Learning Machine” reasoning depends on the processing power of the machines, so it goes a long way.
